How to Scan Documents to PDF with Your Phone (Free)

Short answer
Open our free Photo to PDF Scanner in your phone browser, tap Take a photo, drag the four corners onto the page, choose the Black and white document filter and press Create PDF. The page is straightened and cleaned on your phone, and nothing is uploaded.
Need to send a signed form, a rent receipt or a page of homework, but you have no scanner at home? Your phone camera is enough. A plain photo usually looks tilted, has a table showing around the edges and grey shadows across the paper. A scanner tool fixes all three so the result looks like it came out of an office machine.
What you need
- A phone or computer with a modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox).
- The page you want to scan, on a flat surface.
- Good, even light, such as a window during the day.
There is no app to install and no account to create. The Photo to PDF Scanner runs inside the browser, so your documents stay on your device.
Step 1: Take a good photo
Lay the paper on a dark, flat surface, because a dark background makes the white page edges easy to find. Hold the phone straight above the page, not at a steep angle. Turn the flash off, since it often leaves a bright spot in the middle of the paper. Tap Take a photo to open the rear camera, or tap Add photos or images to pick pictures you already took. You can select several pages at once.
Step 2: Crop to the page corners
The tool tries to find the page edges by itself. If it misses, drag the four round handles onto the corners of the paper. The page is then flattened with a perspective correction, so a sheet photographed slightly at an angle becomes a straight rectangle. Use Rotate if the page is sideways.
Step 3: Pick a scan filter
| Filter | Best for |
|---|---|
| Black and white document | Forms, contracts, letters and typed notes (removes shadows, makes text crisp) |
| Grayscale | Pages with pencil writing or light shading |
| Enhanced colour | Receipts, coloured drawings, stamps and signatures in blue ink |
| Original colour | Photos or pages where the exact colours matter |
Brightness and contrast sliders fine-tune the result, and one button applies the same filter to every page.
Step 4: Choose page size and create the PDF
Choose A4 (common in India, Europe and most of the world), US Letter (common in the USA and Canada) or a page that fits the scan. Add margins if you plan to print it. For resolution, Standard gives a smaller file, while High keeps small text sharp. Reorder pages with the arrows, then press Create PDF. You get one PDF file with no watermark and no page limit.
Worked example: a 3-page form
Say you need to email a three-page application form. Take three photos, one per page. Check the corners on each, choose Black and white document, tap Use this filter on all pages, set the page size to A4 or US Letter and press Create PDF. That is three pages in one file, ready to attach.
If the email or upload portal says the file is too big, try Standard resolution or a lower image quality and create the PDF again. Our guide on reducing image size without losing quality explains why this works, and the image compressor can shrink photos before you add them.

Is it private?
Yes. The photos are cropped, filtered and turned into a PDF inside your browser using the open-source pdf-lib library. They are not sent to our server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. Even so, treat files with ID numbers or bank details carefully and only send them to people you trust.
Frequently asked questions
Can I scan a document with my phone without an app?
Yes. Open the Photo to PDF Scanner in your phone browser, take a photo of the page, crop it to the corners, pick a scan filter and press Create PDF.
Are my scans uploaded anywhere?
No. All the cropping, filtering and PDF building happens on your own device, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
How do I make the scan sharper?
Use bright, even daylight, a dark flat background, no flash, hold the phone straight above the page, and choose the Black and white document filter with High resolution.
Can I put several pages in one PDF?
Yes. Add or photograph several pages, put them in order with the arrows, and Create PDF makes one file with all of them.
What is the difference between the scanner and Image to PDF?
The scanner crops, straightens and cleans each photo like a document scan. Image to PDF places pictures on pages exactly as they are.
