In brief

US stocks finished higher on Tuesday, October 6, and the S&P 500 set a new all-time closing high of 7,818.93. All three major indexes gained as investors returned to artificial-intelligence stocks and oil prices levelled off.

The broad S&P 500 added 44.98 points, or 0.58%, to end at 7,818.93. According to Dow Jones Market Data, it was the index’s 28th record close of 2026 and its first since August, and it extended a winning streak to four trading days.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 253.38 points, or 0.49%, to 51,521.28, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 122.48 points, or 0.45%, to 27,599.79, another record for the Nasdaq, Kiplinger reported. The Wall Street Journal said renewed interest in AI-related shares and calmer oil futures helped lift the market, and Kiplinger pointed to lower Treasury yields as selling eased in global bond markets.

Among the biggest movers in the S&P 500 were power producers Constellation Energy and Vistra, which both jumped by double digits, according to Investing.com. Investors are now looking ahead to the next corporate earnings season, which begins in the coming weeks.

Why it matters

A record close for the S&P 500 matters for anyone with a retirement plan or index fund, since many of those track the index. Markets can still swing quickly, so long-term savers usually focus on steady contributions rather than single-day moves.
