The rationale is that a caution changes nothing in the immediate game; a 10-minute sin bin has an immediate, tangible impact on the team that commits the offence.

Opinion is genuinely split. Traditionalists argue that football’s imperfections — including the tactical use of time — are part of the sport’s texture.
