Aesop's Fables

Aesop, translated by V. S. Vernon Jones, 1912.

Before you read: These are very old animal stories. A few are sharp about punishment. Skip a fable if it feels mean and talk about it instead.

Short animal stories, each with a moral you can argue with. A fox calls grapes sour when he cannot reach them. A boy cries wolf until nobody comes. A tortoise beats a hare who wastes a lead. The Jones translation is a 1912 English retelling of tales already ancient in Greek tradition. They were never one tidy book by one man named Aesop, but this edition is a clear public-domain collection families can read one story at a time.
