Short answer

Standard UK VAT is often 20%. Gross = net × 1.20. Net = gross ÷ 1.20. Example: net 50 → VAT 10 → gross 60.

UK invoices and receipts mix VAT-inclusive and exclusive prices. Adding is easy; removing is where people subtract 20% by mistake.

Add 20% VAT

VAT = net × 0.20
gross = net × 1.20

Remove 20% VAT

net = gross ÷ 1.20
VAT = gross − net

Wrong method: taking 20% off the gross. Right method: divide by 1.20. On a 60 gross price, net = 50, not 48.
