APR vs Interest Rate: What Is the Difference?

Short answer

The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the principal. APR folds in certain upfront fees to show a broader yearly cost — use APR (or total cost) when comparing offers.

Two lenders can quote the same rate and still differ in APR once fees appear. Always read both numbers.

Interest rate

Drives the amortization formula for principal and interest. See mortgage payment by hand.

APR

Standardised to include specified fees. A loan with a low rate and a large origination fee can have a higher APR than a slightly higher-rate, fee-free loan.

How to compare

Put offers into the loan comparison calculator, and sanity-check monthly dues with the mortgage calculator or EMI calculator.

Limits

APR rules differ by country and product. Variable-rate APRs can change. Still compare total cash paid over the life you actually expect to keep the loan.

How to practise

Invent three mini-problems from your own life — a bill, a grade, a trip, a loan quote — and solve them on paper before you open the calculator. Teaching the steps to someone else is one of the fastest ways to lock in the method.
