How to use: Enter fixed costs, price per unit and variable cost per unit. Read break-even units and revenue.
How to use the Break-Even Calculator
Fixed costs stay the same whether you sell one unit or a thousand (rent, software, basic salaries). Variable costs rise with each sale (materials, payment fees, shipping).
Contribution margin per unit is price minus variable cost. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution margin. Break-even revenue = break-even units × price.
Add an optional profit target to see how many extra units you need beyond break-even. If price is not higher than variable cost, the tool warns that you cannot break even at that margin.
Use the numbers when pricing a side project, comparing suppliers, or checking whether a discount still leaves room to cover overhead.
This is educational planning only. Taxes, inventory write-offs and one-off launch costs can move the real figure — confirm with your own books or an accountant before big decisions.
Take a minute to sanity-check units and labels before you rely on a number for school, work or money decisions. If a result looks surprising, change one input at a time and watch how the answer moves — that is the fastest way to learn the method. ViralScopeHub tools stay free, need no account and keep your numbers in the browser so homework and business figures are not uploaded to our servers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the break-even point?
The sales level where total revenue equals total costs, so profit is zero.
What is contribution margin?
Price minus variable cost per unit — the amount left to cover fixed costs and profit.
Can I use services instead of products?
Yes. Treat each client project or hour package as one “unit”.
Does it include tax?
No. Enter amounts in the same tax basis you use in your plan (usually before income tax).
