How to use the Compress PDF
Choose or drop a PDF, then pick a level. “Balanced” is a good start for scanned documents, certificates and forms. “Smallest file” is for strict upload limits such as 200 KB or 1 MB, and “Best quality” keeps small text sharp.
The compressor redraws every page as a JPEG image at the chosen resolution and quality, then builds a new PDF with the same page sizes. This works best for scans and photo-heavy PDFs, which are often 5–10 times larger than they need to be. Because pages become images, text in the new file can no longer be selected or searched, so keep the original if you need that.
Worked example: a 6-page phone scan of 8.4 MB compressed on Balanced comes out around 1.1 MB, a saving of about 87%. The same file on Smallest file is about 450 KB, small enough for most government and exam portals.
If the result is not smaller, the PDF was already well optimised; the tool tells you and you can keep the original. Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first. Everything runs on your device using the open-source pdf.js and pdf-lib libraries, so private documents never leave your phone or computer.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The file is read and rebuilt in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
How do I get a PDF under 200 KB?
Choose “Smallest file”. If it is still too big, split the PDF and keep only the pages you need with the PDF splitter.
Will text stay selectable?
No. Pages are turned into images to save space, so text cannot be copied afterwards. Keep your original for editing.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but very large PDFs (hundreds of pages) may be slow on older phones.
Does it add a watermark?
No. The compressed PDF has no watermark and no sign-up is needed.
