How to use the Hours Calculator
Enter a start time and an end time for a work shift. Optionally add a break in minutes. The calculator returns total hours and minutes worked, plus a decimal-hours figure that timesheets and payroll systems often prefer.
Overnight shifts are supported: if the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the shift crossed midnight. Always confirm that assumption matches your schedule.
Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate (or use our salary calculator) to estimate gross pay for the shift or week. Sum several days manually or export the decimal totals into a spreadsheet for a full pay period.
This is not a legal timesheet. Local overtime rules, rounding policies, and unpaid meal breaks vary by employer and jurisdiction. Use official payroll tools for compliance.
Pair with the date-difference calculator when you need calendar days between shifts, and with the salary converter when switching between hourly and annual pay.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract start from end in minutes, subtract breaks, then convert back to hours and minutes.
What about overnight shifts?
Enable “End time is next day” so 22:00 to 06:00 counts 8 hours.
Can I enter seconds?
This version uses hours and minutes; round seconds as your payroll requires.
Does it calculate overtime pay?
No — it only measures duration. Apply your overtime rate separately.
