DOE Closes $1.9B Loan for Iowa Nuclear Restart

In brief
The U.S. Department of Energy said it has financially closed a loan of up to 1.9 billion dollars to NextEra Energy to help restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Linn County, Iowa. The plant, offline since 2020, would restore about 615 megawatts of baseload power if nuclear regulators approve the restart.
In a September 8, 2026 announcement that remains central to U.S. nuclear restart coverage, DOE’s Office of Energy Dominance Financing said the loan supports bringing Iowa’s only nuclear station back online. Officials estimated nearly 1,500 construction jobs and more than 450 operations jobs, and said the output could serve on the order of half a million homes.
DOE framed Duane Arnold as part of a broader push to restart shuttered reactors and expand nuclear supply as electricity demand grows. The department said the financing was its third plant-restart deal of this kind under the current administration, with work still subject to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing.
Power planners across the Midwest are watching how restarts stack up against rising load from industry and data centers. Timelines can slip if licensing, grid upgrades, or construction costs change.
