How to Count the Days Between Two Dates (With or Without the End Date)

Short answer
To count the days between two dates, subtract the earlier date from the later one. From October 21 to December 25, 2026 is 65 days. That number does not count the start day. If you want to count both the first and the last day (for example, for a hotel stay or a leave form that asks for "days inclusive"), add 1, which gives 66. Our free date difference calculator does this instantly and handles leap years for you.
"How many days until my exam?", "How long was I away?" and "How many days are left on my visa?" all come down to the same small piece of maths. It sounds easy, but two things trip people up: months have different lengths, and people disagree on whether the start or end day should count. This guide shows a simple method that works on paper, the rule for "inclusive" counts, and quick checks so you never miss by one. When you just want the answer, the date difference calculator gives it in a second.
Step 1: Decide what you are counting
There are two common ways to count, and both are "correct" depending on the question:
- Elapsed days (the default). How many days pass between the two dates. From Monday to Wednesday is 2 days. Calendars, countdowns and most calculators use this.
- Inclusive days. Both the first and the last day count. A trip from Monday to Wednesday covers 3 calendar days. Leave forms, event passes and some contracts use this. Inclusive = elapsed + 1.
If a form says "from and including" or "days inclusive", add 1. If it just asks "how many days until", do not.
Step 2: Count the days left in the start month
Take the number of days in the start month and subtract the start date. For October 21: October has 31 days, so 31 β 21 = 10 days remain (October 22 to 31).
Step 3: Add the full months in between
Add the length of each complete month between the two dates. Going from October 21 to December 25, the only full month in between is November, which has 30 days.
Step 4: Add the days in the end month
Add the day number of the end date. December 25 adds 25 days. Total: 10 + 30 + 25 = 65 days. That matches what our Christmas countdown shows today.
| From October 21, 2026 to | Elapsed days | Inclusive days |
|---|---|---|
| Halloween (October 31, 2026) | 10 | 11 |
| Canada's federal budget day (November 5, 2026) | 15 | 16 |
| Diwali (November 8, 2026) | 18 | 19 |
| Christmas (December 25, 2026) | 65 | 66 |
| New Year's Day (January 1, 2027) | 72 | 73 |
Month lengths you need to know
Most mistakes come from guessing a month's length. Seven months have 31 days (January, March, May, July, August, October and December), four have 30 days (April, June, September and November), and February has 28, or 29 in a leap year. The old "knuckle trick" helps: make a fist, and each knuckle is a 31-day month while each dip between knuckles is a shorter month.
Leap years and long ranges
A leap year adds February 29. A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except century years, which must divide by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2026 and 2027 are not, and 2000 was one while 1900 was not. For ranges longer than a year, count whole years first (365 days each, or 366 if the range contains a February 29), then handle the leftover months with the steps above. For example, January 1 to December 31, 2026 is 364 elapsed days, or 365 inclusive, because 2026 is not a leap year.
For ages and birthdays, the age calculator does the same job in years, months and days, and our guide on calculating age from a date of birth explains the method. If you only care about working days, read how to count business days between dates, which skips weekends and holidays.
Quick ways to check your answer
- Weeks check. Divide by 7. 65 days is 9 weeks and 2 days. October 21, 2026 is a Wednesday, so 9 weeks later is also a Wednesday, and 2 more days lands on Friday. Christmas 2026 is indeed a Friday. See how many weeks are in a year for more on this.
- Off-by-one check. Try a tiny range you can picture, like today to tomorrow. That should be 1 elapsed day. If your method gives 2, you are counting inclusively.
- Calculator check. Put both dates into the date difference calculator, or set a live countdown timer to watch the days, hours and minutes tick down.
Where this comes up
Students use day counts to plan revision before a test. Our exam guides and study pages pair well with a countdown, and the exam study plan guide shows how to split the days you have. Travellers count nights for hotels and days for visas or travel insurance. When you are ready to book, compare fares on our flights hub and check local times with the time zone converter. Remember that a hotel charges per night, which equals elapsed days, while a "10-day tour" usually counts days inclusively.
VSH take: nearly every "wrong" day count is really a mix-up between elapsed and inclusive days. Decide which one the question wants before you start, and the rest is simple adding.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the number of days between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one: count the days left in the start month, add the full months in between, then add the day number of the end date. A date difference calculator does this automatically.
Should I include the start and end date?
A normal day count (elapsed days) includes only one of them. If a form asks for days "inclusive", count both the first and the last day by adding 1 to the elapsed count.
How many days are there until Christmas 2026 from October 21?
There are 65 days from October 21 to December 25, 2026, or 66 if you count both days.
Do leap years change the count?
Yes. If your range includes February 29 of a leap year (such as 2028), add one extra day. 2026 and 2027 are not leap years.
How many days are in a year?
A common year has 365 days and a leap year has 366. That is 52 weeks plus 1 or 2 days.
