How to use the Final Grade Calculator

Enter your current course average as a percentage and the weight of the final exam (for example 30 if the final is worth 30% of the course). Then type the overall percentage you want to finish with—often 70, 80, or 90 depending on your grading scale.

The calculator solves for the score you need on the final: required = (goal − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. If the answer is above 100%, the goal may be unreachable without extra credit; if it is negative, you have already locked the target.

Use the same percentage scale your syllabus uses. If your school reports letter grades, convert them with the published cutoffs first (for example B+ = 87). Mixed points and percentages work only when you convert everything to one scale before calculating.

Run a few goals side by side—pass, B, and A—so you know how much study time the final is worth. Combine this with our GPA and percentage calculators when you are planning a whole semester, not just one exam.

Always double-check the official syllabus weights. Some courses curve, drop the lowest quiz, or cap the final; those policies can change what you truly need on exam day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

needed = (goal×100 − current×(100−weight)) ÷ weight, with weight as the final’s percent of the course.

What if the result is over 100%?

The target is not reachable with the current grade and weight unless extra credit exists.

Can I use points instead of percents?

Convert everything to percentages of the course first, or keep units consistent.

Is this the same as a GPA calculator?

No. This finds one exam score; GPA averages letter grades across courses.
