How to use the Gold Jewellery Price Calculator
Look up today’s gold rate per 10 grams from your jeweller or a trusted rate site and say whether it is the 24K or 22K rate. Pick the purity of the piece you are buying, its weight and the making charges, which jewellers quote as a percentage, a rate per gram or a flat amount. Add stone charges if any, and old gold if you are exchanging it.
Formula: rate per gram for your purity = 24K rate ÷ 10 ÷ 0.999 × purity (0.916 for 22K). Gold value = rate per gram × weight. Price = (gold value + making + other charges) × 1.03 for 3% GST, minus the value of any old gold after the jeweller’s deduction.
Worked example: with 24K at ₹1,50,000 per 10 g, a 10 g 22K chain costs ₹1,37,538 in gold. Making at 12% adds ₹16,505, GST adds ₹4,621, so you pay about ₹1,58,663, or ₹15,866 per gram.
Gold prices are high this festive season, so a couple of percent in making charges is real money; compare a few shops before Dhanteras (6 November 2026). Always ask for the BIS hallmark with a 6-digit HUID. This is an estimate, not financial advice. Rates change through the day. Hallmark rules: Bureau of Indian Standards. Updated October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How much GST is charged on gold jewellery?
3% on the value of the gold plus making charges. Making charges for job work on your own gold are taxed at 5%.
What are normal making charges?
Usually 6–25% of the gold value, depending on the design and shop. Machine-made chains are cheaper; detailed handmade pieces cost more.
How is the 22K rate worked out from 24K?
22K gold is 91.6% pure, so its rate is about 91.7% of the 24K (99.9%) rate.
How do I check the hallmark?
Look for the BIS logo, purity grade (like 22K916) and a 6-digit HUID, then verify the HUID in the free BIS Care app.
Is buying gold on Dhanteras a good investment?
It is a tradition for many families. As an investment, gold can rise and fall; jewellery also carries making charges you do not get back when selling.
