Quebec's strategic maple syrup reserve has run dry, producers say

In brief
Quebec's strategic maple syrup reserve, the stockpile producers use to keep supply and prices steady between good and bad harvests, has been used up, the head of the province's producers' association said this week. Québec Maple Syrup Producers president Luc Goulet told The Canadian Press the reserve "has been reduced to zero" as sales keep rising.
Why the reserve emptied
Maple sap only flows well when spring nights are cold and days are mild, so the size of each harvest changes from year to year. The reserve exists to smooth out those swings. According to The Canadian Press, American commercial buyers stocked up heavily last year because they feared new U.S. tariffs, and demand has stayed strong since. Exports grew 9.34% in 2024 and 15.8% in 2025, then slowed to 2.48% growth from January to August 2026, said Louis Turenne, president of the Maple Industry Council, which represents authorized buyers.
What producers are asking for
Goulet warned that a weak sugaring season could now leave buyers short, and he pointed to 2007 and 2008, when shortages cost the industry some markets as customers switched to other sweeteners. Producers say there is room to tap more trees and want more support from the new Parti Québécois government. Turenne said about 65% of exports still go to the United States, down from around 80% twenty years ago, and that the industry wants to grow faster in Europe, Australia and Asia. An industry report released last week said Quebec makes more than 70% of North America's maple syrup and that the sector added $1.21 billion to GDP in 2025.
VSH take: an empty reserve is really a sign of success, but it also shows how much one product can depend on the weather. If you buy syrup in bulk, the unit price comparer shows whether the big jug is really cheaper per millilitre, the percentage calculator turns those export growth numbers into plain amounts, and the currency converter helps if you are sending Canadian syrup abroad as a gift.
