In brief

Alphabet’s Waymo said on 16 October that it is preparing a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Toronto, with a goal of welcoming riders in 2028. Manually driven Waymo vehicles will begin high-definition mapping and safety validation on city streets, the company blog stated, in partnership with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management.

Phased approach

Waymo’s announcement stresses a safety-first sequence: map local roads, test with trained specialists behind the wheel, then seek further approvals before driverless commercial service. Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana called Canada an important expansion milestone. Element CEO Laura Dottori-Attanasio said the firms would create jobs in fleet maintenance, validation driving and customer operations over time.

Local context

CBC and other Canadian outlets noted Ontario permissions for early testing phases and that commercial robotaxi service still depends on later permits and winter validation. Waymo cited existing Canadian ties including investor CPPIB and manufacturer Magna.

What is not live yet

Residents cannot hail a driverless Waymo in Toronto today. The 2028 target is a company goal, not a guaranteed launch date. Accessibility groups named as early collaborators include BALANCE for Blind Adults and CNIB, per Waymo’s post.

Why it matters

Toronto would be Waymo’s first Canadian city. How regulators, winters and public trust shape the pilot will matter for other Canadian metros watching closely.
