Short answer

For a Caribbean trip this winter, a regional Caribbean eSIM is usually the simplest choice: one plan covers many islands, so you don't buy a new SIM at every stop. If you are on a cruise, pick a plan that says it works on the ship as well as in ports, because most travel eSIMs only work on land. GigSky has lowered prices on all its Caribbean data plans for winter and sells cruise plans; check current GigSky Caribbean plans or compare options on our travel eSIM page. We don't list prices here because they change often.

The Caribbean is one of the trickiest places to stay connected. A one-week trip can touch four or five different countries and territories, each with its own mobile networks, and a cruise adds days at sea where normal phone signal disappears. Here is how to pick a data plan without paying roaming prices or losing signal between islands.

The winter deal: GigSky Caribbean price drop

GigSky, a travel eSIM provider, has lowered prices on all of its Caribbean eSIM data plans for the winter season, and it also sells cruise eSIM plans. Prices depend on data amount and validity and can change at any time, so we don't quote numbers here. See GigSky's current Caribbean plans and compare them with your carrier's travel pass before you buy.

Which islands does a Caribbean eSIM cover?

Coverage is the first thing to check, because "Caribbean" plans differ by provider. GigSky's Caribbean plan lists destinations including:

Lists change, so open the provider's destination list and tick off every stop on your itinerary. Cruises often stop in Mexico (Cozumel, Costa Maya), Belize or Honduras (Roatán), and these are often not in a Caribbean-only plan. For those routes, look for an "Americas and Caribbean" or cruise plan that names them.

Cruise tips: data at sea vs in port

This is where most people get caught. On a ship, your phone may connect to the ship's own maritime cellular network. If your home SIM roams onto it, charges can be very high, and many home carrier travel passes do not cover it.

  1. Before you board: turn off data roaming on your home line, or put it in airplane mode and turn Wi-Fi back on.
  2. Want data while sailing? You need either the ship's Wi-Fi package or an eSIM plan that is sold for use on ships. GigSky says its cruise plans work on 290+ cruise ships as well as in ports, and offers a small free cruise data plan to test the connection. Read GigSky's cruise plan guide to check your ship and ports.
  3. Only need data in port? A land-only regional Caribbean eSIM is usually enough: messages and maps when you step off, nothing at sea.
  4. Install early, switch on late: install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, but only turn it on (and set it as your data line) when you need it, so validity days don't run out before your trip starts.
  5. Download offline maps of each port before you board, in case signal is weak near the dock.

How to set up a Caribbean eSIM

  1. Check your phone: it must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most recent iPhones, Pixels and many Samsung Galaxy phones do.
  2. Buy the plan that matches your stops and the number of days you'll actually use data.
  3. Install on Wi-Fi at home by scanning the QR code or using the provider's app. Label it "Caribbean".
  4. On arrival, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for the eSIM only if the provider says so. Keep your home line for calls and texts, with its data roaming off.
  5. Check usage in the app every day or two, and top up rather than letting your home line take over.

The travel hub has hotels, transfers and insurance in one place. Many islands price in U.S. dollars, but some use the Eastern Caribbean dollar or another local currency, so check prices with the currency converter, and use the world clock to keep track of time at home: most islands are on Atlantic or Eastern time.

VSH take

For a resort holiday on one or two islands, a land-only regional eSIM is the sweet spot: cheap, simple and you keep your number. For a cruise, the real cost trap is the ship network on sea days, so decide up front: either switch your home line off and live on ship Wi-Fi, or buy a plan that clearly says it works on ships. GigSky's winter price drop makes it worth a fresh look if you priced it before, but compare the current plan, the data amount and the validity days with your carrier's travel pass. Buy for the days you need, not the biggest bundle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for a Caribbean cruise?

One that clearly says it works on cruise ships as well as in your ports. Most travel eSIMs only work on land. GigSky sells cruise plans it says cover 290+ ships; check your ship and itinerary on the provider's list before buying.

Does a Caribbean eSIM work on the ship at sea?

A normal regional Caribbean eSIM usually works only on land, in the islands it lists. At sea you need ship Wi-Fi or a cruise-specific plan.

How do I avoid roaming charges on a cruise?

Turn off data roaming on your home line, or use airplane mode with Wi-Fi on, before the ship leaves port. Ship cellular networks can charge high roaming rates.

Are GigSky Caribbean prices lower this winter?

Yes, GigSky has lowered prices on all its Caribbean eSIM data plans for winter. Prices change, so check the current plans on its site before you buy.

Will my WhatsApp number still work with an eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to your number. The eSIM provides data while your home SIM can stay on for calls and texts.

Does a Caribbean eSIM cover Cozumel or Roatán?

Often not, because Mexico and Honduras are not Caribbean island countries. Choose an Americas and Caribbean or cruise plan that lists them.
