Short answer

The quickest free way is to open our HEIC to JPG converter, select one or more .heic photos and download the JPGs (or a ZIP). It runs in your browser, so photos are not uploaded. To stop the problem at the source, set your iPhone to Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible, which saves new photos as JPG.

iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, a form of the HEIF standard) by default. HEIC files are about half the size of JPGs at similar quality, which saves storage. The catch is that many Windows PCs, older Android phones, websites and application portals still refuse them.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter on any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari).
  2. Choose JPG (or PNG if you need lossless) and a quality level. 85–92% is a good balance.
  3. Select one or many .heic or .heif files.
  4. Download each JPG, or all of them as a ZIP.

The decoder (based on the open-source libheif library) runs on your own device. That matters for ID cards, certificates and family photos you would rather not send to an unknown server.

How do I make my iPhone take JPG instead of HEIC?

Go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC. There is also a setting under Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC: Automatic converts photos to a compatible format when you copy them to a computer by cable.

How do I open HEIC on Windows?

Windows 10 and 11 can display HEIC photos after you install Microsoft's free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. That lets you view them, but some apps and upload forms still reject the format, so converting to JPG is the safer choice when you must submit a file.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPG is a lossy format. At 90% quality the difference is very hard to see. The bigger change is file size: a 1.5 MB HEIC photo may become a 2.5 to 3 MB JPG. If a form has a size limit, run the result through the image compressor afterwards. Our guide on reducing image size without losing quality explains the settings.

What about Live Photos and HEIC videos?

A Live Photo is a still image plus a short video clip. Converting gives you the still JPG only. HEVC video files (.mov) are a different format and are not changed by an image converter.

Need a PDF instead?

Many portals want documents as one PDF. Convert the HEIC photos to JPG first, then combine them with our JPG to PDF guide. For paper documents, our tips on scanning documents with your phone give cleaner results than a plain photo.
