How to Split a PDF Free (Extract or Delete Pages)

Short answer
To split a PDF for free, open our PDF Splitter, choose the file, pick the page ranges you want, and download each part. The work happens in your browser, so private documents are not uploaded to a server.
Application portals, schools and insurers often ask for one page from a longer PDF, or they reject a file that mixes an ID scan with other papers. Splitting lets you extract exactly what you need without installing software.
How do I split a PDF without uploading it?
Upload-based sites store a copy of your file, at least briefly. A safer option for IDs, marksheets and bank statements is a tool that runs locally. Our PDF Splitter uses the same open-source pdf-lib approach as our merger.
- Open the PDF Splitter in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
- Add your PDF. The tool shows the page count.
- Enter the pages or ranges you want (for example 1, 3-5, 8).
- Press split and download the new file or files.
Once the page has loaded, a weak connection does not stop you, because nothing is sent to our servers.
Worked example: extract two pages from a six-page scan
Imagine a six-page scan where page 2 is your photo ID and page 5 is a signature page. Enter 2 and 5 as separate extracts, or 2,5 if the tool accepts a list. You get a short PDF that only contains those pages. If the portal wants them joined again with a cover letter, merge the extracts with PDF Merger.
| Goal | Pages to keep | Result |
|---|---|---|
| ID only | 2 | 1-page PDF |
| ID + signature | 2, 5 | 2-page PDF |
| Drop blank last page | 1-5 | 5-page PDF |
Split a PDF on a phone
The same steps work in mobile Chrome or Safari. If your papers are still photos, convert them with Image to PDF first, then split. For scanning tips, see how to scan documents with your phone.
When should I compress after splitting?
Splitting does not shrink photo-heavy pages. If email or a portal caps size at 1 or 2 MB, run the result through Compress PDF. Shrinking images before you build the PDF also helps; see how to reduce image size without losing quality.
Common problems
- Password-protected PDF: open it with the password, save an unprotected copy, then split that copy.
- Wrong pages: page numbers in the tool match the PDF viewer, starting at 1.
- Need one combined file again: use the PDF Merger after you extract the parts.

Frequently asked questions
Can I split a PDF for free online without an account?
Yes. A browser-based splitter needs no install and no sign-up on phone or computer.
Are my files uploaded when I split them here?
No. The PDF is read and split inside your browser, so the bytes stay on your device.
Can I extract a single page from a PDF?
Yes. Enter that page number only, then download the one-page file.
What if my PDF is password protected?
Unlock it first, save a copy without the password, then split the unlocked copy.
Does splitting reduce file size a lot?
Only if you drop heavy pages. Photo pages may still need compression afterwards.
