Short answer

To watermark photos for free, open our Add Watermark to Photo tool, choose one or more photos, type your name or pick a logo, set the position, size and opacity, and download. For most photos, a corner mark at 50 to 60% opacity looks professional; use a tiled watermark if your photos are often copied.

A watermark is a small mark, such as your name, shop or logo, placed on a photo to show who made it. It will not stop every copy, but it makes reuse without credit harder and turns shared photos into free advertising. Photographers, artists, small online shops and real-estate agents use one before posting.

In many countries, including the United States, copyright protects an original photo from the moment it is created, whether or not it has a watermark. The US Copyright Office explains this in its copyright basics. A watermark simply makes it clear who the owner is. This is general information, not legal advice.

Step 1: Choose your watermark

Step 2: Place it well

Open the watermark tool and add your photos. Then choose a position:

Step 3: Size, opacity and colour

Start with a size of about 4 to 6% and opacity around 50 to 60%. White text with the soft shadow reads well on both light and dark areas. Check the preview at phone size: the mark should be readable but should not hide the product or face.

Step 4: Watermark many photos at once

Choose up to 30 photos together. The same settings apply to every one, and Download all saves each photo. JPG keeps files small, PNG keeps full quality, and WebP is smallest for websites (see PNG vs JPG vs WebP).

Pick one style and use it on everything; consistency is what makes a watermark feel like a brand. For selling, a corner mark is enough. Only go tiled for previews of digital work. Most watermark apps add their own logo or upload your pictures; ours does neither, because it runs on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Does a watermark protect my copyright?

In many countries copyright applies automatically when you create an original photo. A watermark does not create copyright, but it shows who the owner is and discourages reuse without credit.

Where should I put a watermark?

A bottom corner is the most common and looks professional. A tiled watermark is hardest to remove and suits previews of work you sell.

What opacity is best for a watermark?

Around 50 to 60% works for most photos: visible, but not distracting.

Can I watermark many photos at once for free?

Yes. Our tool applies the same watermark to up to 30 photos and lets you download them all.
