How the CLB conversion works
IRCC does not score the test itself. It converts each of your four skill results (speaking, listening, reading, writing) to a Canadian Language Benchmark level for English or an NCLC level for French, using a fixed chart for each approved test. Your CRS points and your program eligibility come from those levels. This converter uses IRCC’s published equivalency charts for the five accepted tests.
Tests IRCC accepts for Express Entry
- English: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, PTE Core
- French: TEF Canada, TCF Canada
IELTS Academic and IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted for Express Entry. Results are valid for two years from the test date when you complete your profile and when you apply.
Why the lowest skill matters
Programs such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program need CLB 7 in all four skills, and the Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs. One weak skill can block eligibility even when the other three are high. Reaching CLB 9 in all four skills can also unlock extra skill transferability points in the CRS.
TEF Canada note
Use the column called “Équivalence ancien score” on your TEF result, not the “Score / 699” column. IRCC says the new score is not yet compatible with Express Entry.
VSH take: if you are 0.5 band away from the next CLB level on one skill, a retake of just that section is not accepted for IELTS (no One Skill Retake), so plan the full test carefully. See the IELTS guide, CELPIP guide and PTE guide.
