How to use: Enter your dog’s age in years and months and choose its adult size.
Convert your dog’s age to human years using the vet size guideline and a DNA-based formula.
How are dog years worked out?
The “multiply by 7” rule is a myth. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s guideline says the first year of a medium dog is about 15 human years, year two adds about 9, and each year after adds about 4–7 depending on size, because big dogs age faster. We also show a 2020 University of California San Diego study formula, human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, which was based on DNA changes in Labrador retrievers.
VSH take: senior dogs benefit from vet checkups twice a year. Got a cat too? Try the cat age calculator.
Examples
- 3-year-old medium dog: 24 + 5 = 29 human years.
- 10-year-old giant dog: 24 + 7 × 8 = 80 human years.
- 6-month-old puppy: About 7.5 human years.
