In brief

Two commercial ships sank near the Strait of Hormuz after projectile strikes, maritime officials said. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority confirmed the container ship GFS Pride caught fire and sank with all 21 crew evacuated unharmed, while Reuters reported the bulk carrier Cape Dao also sank after a September strike that killed one crew member.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on 14 October 2026 that two Singapore-registered container vessels, GFS Pride and GFS Giselle, were struck by unknown projectiles while transiting the strait on 13 and 14 October (Singapore time). GFS Pride sustained damage and a fire and has since sunk; all 21 crew were safely evacuated with no injuries reported. GFS Giselle reached a safe anchorage under its own power with 22 crew safe.

MPA said it was deeply concerned about continued attacks on commercial shipping in the strait, calling such attacks unprovoked, unjustifiable and a breach of international law. Reuters separately reported that the Antigua and Barbuda–flagged Cape Dao sank close to the strait weeks after a 23 September projectile strike, with one crew member killed and the rest evacuated after that earlier hit.

Reuters noted attacks around the waterway have surged, with Iran saying it is stepping up strikes in response to a U.S. blockade of its ports and tougher sanctions. Independent confirmation of who fired on each vessel was not included in the MPA statement.
