In brief

Ukraine has ended a short pause in its attacks on Russian oil refineries. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv held back for three days, as the United States had asked, while Russia kept striking Ukraine’s energy system. Russia then said Ukraine had tried a large attack on a refinery in Ryazan, south-east of Moscow, on Thursday, and that falling debris started a fire at the site.

What happened

According to the BBC, Russia’s defence ministry said it intercepted four missiles and dozens of drones aimed at the Ryazan refinery, and that debris caused a fire. Zelensky told the Financial Times “we’re done” with the pause. He said Ukraine would only stop such strikes again if the US supplied more Patriot air defence missiles, the BBC reported.

Why the pause ended

US President Donald Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” last Sunday. Zelensky had said he would respect it if Moscow did too, but he accused Russia of ignoring it within hours, with strikes leaving hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians without power. The Kremlin never said it had agreed to the deal. Local officials reported at least 13 people killed across Ukraine on Wednesday, and Zelensky said more than 850 drones were launched at dozens of cities.

Tension with Washington

Zelensky also accused the US of cutting back intelligence-sharing and Starlink satellite functions to pressure Kyiv to stop the refinery attacks. Trump has denied halting intelligence-sharing. Ukrainian defence sources later told the BBC that some Starlink functions had been restored. European leaders, meeting in Brussels, voiced support for Ukraine.

Why it matters

Refinery strikes are one of Ukraine’s main ways to hit Russia’s oil income, and their return, together with strains in US support, could affect both the war and global fuel markets.
