IEA Members to Speed Up Emergency Oil Release, Including Diesel

In brief
The International Energy Agency’s Governing Board agreed on Oct. 15, 2026, to speed up the remaining releases from the emergency oil stock action its members launched in March in response to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. About 330 million barrels have been released so far, and roughly 100 million barrels are still to come, including more than 20 million barrels of diesel “as soon as possible.”
What the IEA decided
In a statement after the meeting, the IEA said its latest assessments point to continued tightness in oil markets, especially for diesel. The board agreed to complete the outstanding volumes in a timely way, in line with each country’s circumstances, and noted that some members have released more than they pledged in March, so the total will end up above the original 400 million barrels.
The board also urged members that produce crude oil or run refineries to raise supply of crude and fuels, particularly diesel, and stressed the importance of the free flow of energy trade. The agency said it will keep tracking progress and report to G7 leaders, building on the G7 statement of Oct. 2.
What is not yet known
The statement did not give a country-by-country breakdown or a fixed end date for the remaining releases, and it did not forecast what the move will mean for pump prices.
