In brief

The International Monetary Fund expects the world economy to grow 3.1% in 2026, slightly better than its July forecast of 3.0% but slower than 3.5% in 2025, according to its October World Economic Outlook released on October 13. It projects growth of 3.4% in 2027 and warns that risks, including conflict, debt and a possible AI-related market correction, lean to the downside.

Key forecasts

What the forecast assumes

The IMF said its numbers assume the Middle East conflict does not escalate further and energy markets gradually return to normal. AP reported that the forecasts are built on oil averaging about $96 US a barrel this year and on oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz resuming by March. Strong investment in artificial intelligence is helping offset higher energy costs, but the IMF said the benefits are uneven, with growth concentrated in fewer countries.

Advice to governments

The report urges countries to rebuild their budgets and, during cost-of-living crises, to use temporary support aimed at the most vulnerable households rather than broad price caps, which it found can cost far more.
