How the spelling quiz works
Press Hear the word and your device reads the word, a short sentence that uses it, and the word again, just like a spelling test at school. Type the spelling and press Check. If you are not sure, listen again as many times as you like. The sentence is also shown with a gap, which helps with words that sound alike, such as “through” and “threw”. At the end you get a score and a list of words to practise.
Spelling tips that really help
- Look, say, cover, write, check: look at the word, say it, cover it, write it from memory, then check.
- Break long words into parts: en-vi-ron-ment, im-por-tant.
- Learn the tricky bits: “necessary” has one collar (c) and two sleeves (ss).
- Find small words inside: there is “a rat” in “separate”.
- Practise little and often, and use new words in your own sentences.
About the word lists
The easy list uses short, common words for early readers. The medium list includes words many children find tricky around ages 8–9, and the hard list covers commonly misspelled words for ages 10–12. The quiz uses British spelling for “favourite”. Speech uses your device’s built-in voice, so it works offline once the page has loaded, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I hear the word?
Your device needs a text-to-speech voice. Most phones and computers have one; check the volume and try another browser if needed.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes. There is no chat, no sign-up and nothing is stored.
Does it use British or American spelling?
Mostly words that are the same in both. “Favourite” uses British spelling.
