New York paycheck rules for 2026
New York State uses nine income tax rates, starting at 3.9% on the first $8,500 of taxable income for a single filer (the five lowest rates were cut by 0.1 point for 2026) and rising to 10.9% above $25 million. For withholding, the Tax Department’s method subtracts $7,400 for a single filer and $1,000 for each exemption on the IT-2104, then applies its annual rate schedule.
Payroll deductions unique to New York
- Paid Family Leave: 0.432% of gross pay, capped at $411.91 for the year.
- Disability (SDI): an employer may collect 0.5% of weekly pay up to $0.60 a week ($31.20 a year). Many employers pay it themselves, so check your stub.
Tax-benefit recapture
New York phases out the benefit of the lower brackets for higher earners. The official withholding schedule builds this in, which is why its effective rates between about $96,800 and $265,400 of taxable pay are higher than the plain bracket rates. This calculator follows the official schedule (NYS-50-T-NYS, revised 1/26).
New York City and Yonkers
This page does not include New York City or Yonkers resident tax. If you live in the city your take-home pay will be lower. We plan a separate NYC page.
What every US employee pays
All 2026 figures here are the official ones: a federal standard deduction of $16,100 for a single filer, income tax bands from 10% to 37%, Social Security at 6.2% on the first $184,500 of pay, and Medicare at 1.45% on all pay (plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000). Pre-tax 401(k) money lowers federal and most state income tax, but not Social Security or Medicare.
VSH take: the state rate stays at or below 5.9% for most workers earning under about $96,000 of taxable pay. The bigger jump in your paycheck comes if you live in New York City, which adds its own tax.
