How to use: Enter your yearly pay before tax and how often you are paid. Add any pre-tax 401(k) or similar contributions. Your take-home pay per paycheck and the full list of deductions appear instantly. Choose your state first.

Turn your yearly salary into take-home pay per paycheck, with federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and your state’s deductions shown line by line.

How this paycheck calculator works

It works out your whole year first and then divides by the number of paychecks. That avoids the rounding games payroll software plays and matches how your tax return is figured. It uses 2026 federal rules for a single filer with the standard deduction, then adds the state rules for the six states we have built so far.

What every US employee pays

All 2026 figures here are the official ones: a federal standard deduction of $16,100 for a single filer, income tax bands from 10% to 37%, Social Security at 6.2% on the first $184,500 of pay, and Medicare at 1.45% on all pay (plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000). Pre-tax 401(k) money lowers federal and most state income tax, but not Social Security or Medicare.

States covered so far

States with no wage income tax (Texas, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska and New Hampshire) use the first option. We will add more states gradually, each with its own rules and sources.

VSH take: the number on your pay stub is lower than gross pay mainly because of federal tax and the 7.65% payroll tax. Health insurance premiums, which this tool does not include, are often the next biggest bite.

What is left out

Married filing jointly, extra W-4 withholding, health premiums, local taxes other than the Pennsylvania field, and self-employment.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax is taken out of a $75,000 paycheck?

For a single filer in a no-income-tax state, about $13,408 a year: federal income tax $7,670, Social Security $4,650 and Medicare $1,088. State tax is extra.

Why is my real paycheck different from this estimate?

Your W-4, health premiums, other benefits, bonuses, local taxes and rounding by payroll software all change the real figure.

Does a 401(k) contribution lower my taxes?

Yes for federal and most state income tax, but not for Social Security or Medicare. Pennsylvania is a notable exception: it taxes 401(k) deferrals.

Which states have no income tax on wages?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. Washington taxes no wages but charges payroll premiums.

Is this for married couples?

Not yet. It is for a single filer with the standard deduction.
