Pennsylvania paycheck rules for 2026

Pennsylvania has one personal income tax rate, 3.07%, with no standard deduction or personal exemption. Employees also pay 0.07% of gross pay toward unemployment compensation.

401(k) is different in Pennsylvania

The federal tax saving from pre-tax 401(k) contributions still applies, but Pennsylvania counts them as taxable compensation. This calculator therefore taxes your full gross pay for the state and local tax, whatever you enter as a pre-tax deduction.

Local earned income tax

Most Pennsylvania municipalities and school districts add a local earned income tax. Philadelphia residents pay a wage tax of 3.735% (the rate from 1 July 2026). Enter 3.735 in the local tax box for Philadelphia, or look up your own rate with your employer or the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

What every US employee pays

All 2026 figures here are the official ones: a federal standard deduction of $16,100 for a single filer, income tax bands from 10% to 37%, Social Security at 6.2% on the first $184,500 of pay, and Medicare at 1.45% on all pay (plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000). Pre-tax 401(k) money lowers federal and most state income tax, but not Social Security or Medicare.

VSH take: the flat rate looks low, but the local tax can add 1% to 3.7%, so the town you live in changes your pay more than the state does.
