Over 174,000 Albertans vote on first day of advance polls

In brief
Just over 174,530 Albertans cast ballots on Tuesday, the first of five days of advance voting in the provincial referendum, Elections Alberta said. Referendum day is Monday, October 19, 2026, and the agency is preparing for a record turnout of about 85 per cent, CBC News reported.
What is on the ballot
Voters are answering nine questions that range from constitutional issues to immigration, plus a 10th question asking whether Alberta should explore separating from Canada, according to CBC News.
Strong early interest
Interest appeared high from the start. About 658,000 mail-in ballots were requested last month, and at least one Calgary voting station had a line before its doors opened on Tuesday morning. Elections Alberta said more than 70,000 people applied to work as election officers and more than 46,000 have been hired.
How advance voting works
Advance polls run from Tuesday, October 13 to Saturday, October 17. People must vote in the electoral district where they live, and every district has at least one advance poll. More than 300 advance stations are open across the province, and locations are listed in Elections Alberta's online search tool.
