In brief

The Government of Canada said on October 23, 2026, that it will start accepting applications for the $5,000 Team Canada Strong Red Seal Completion Bonus on November 16. Journeypersons who finished an apprenticeship and got certified in a designated Red Seal trade on or after April 1, 2025, can apply. Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu urged eligible people to gather their documents now so they are ready when the online portal opens.

Who can apply

Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, must not be attending high school, and must have earned certification in a designated Red Seal trade on or after April 1, 2025. Documents you will need include your Social Insurance Number, mailing address, banking details for direct deposit, your Red Seal trade name and certification date, the province or territory where you were certified, and your apprentice identification number. An email address is optional but recommended. Permanent residents whose SIN starts with 9, and protected persons, also need proof of status. Some provinces and territories may ask for extra documents.

Deadlines to know

Once you start an application, all supporting documents must be submitted within 28 calendar days, or you will have to start over. If you were certified between April 1, 2025 and November 15, 2026, you must apply by May 31, 2027. If you are certified on or after November 16, 2026, your application must arrive within 12 months of your certification date. The bonus is part of the government's $8 billion Team Canada Strong plan, which aims to recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers over five years.

VSH take: $5,000 is a real reward for the years an apprenticeship takes, and the generous window means nobody certified since April 2025 misses out. Our tip: put the May 31, 2027 date in your calendar now and dig out your apprentice ID number early, since that is usually the document people hunt for.
