In brief

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that it has certified the Boeing 737 MAX 10, the biggest member of the 737 MAX family. The approval covers both the aircraft's design and its production, which means Boeing can now start delivering the jet to airlines, something the company says will happen in the coming months.

About the plane

According to Boeing, the 737-10 can carry up to 230 passengers in its densest layout and typically 185 to 210 in two classes, with a range of about 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km). Boeing says it uses about 20% less fuel than the older planes it replaces. More than 30 customers have ordered 1,555 of the jets, which is over 30% of unfilled 737 MAX orders. Reports say Calgary-based WestJet is expected to be among the first airlines to fly it, with Ryanair also expecting its first MAX 10s in 2027.

Why it took so long

The FAA said it required the plane to include improvements under the 2020 Aircraft Certification, Safety, and Accountability Act and recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board, including updates to the flight-control system. Boeing says the MAX 10 is the first commercial plane certified to the full extent of that law, after more than 2,000 flight hours and 1,000 hours of ground tests. It also adds an enhanced angle-of-attack system that will become standard on all 737 MAX models.

VSH take: for travellers, the main change will be more seats on busy short and medium routes, which can mean more choice of fares over time. You can check which routes and airlines suit you on our flights hub, read our baggage rules guide before you pack, and use the time zone converter to plan arrival times. The unit converter turns nautical miles into kilometres if you want to compare plane ranges yourself.
