USDA announces $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief program for farmers

In brief
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Monday, Oct. 19, it will make $8 billion available for one-time payments to farmers this harvest season to help with higher diesel and other input costs. President Donald Trump announced the Harvest Fuel Relief Program at a campaign rally in Kansas, and USDA released details shortly afterwards.
How the payments will work
According to USDA, the program will use a single formula to cover part of the losses producers are expected to face in the 2026 crop year. Agri-Pulse reported that the formula draws on planted acres reported to the Farm Service Agency, cost-of-production estimates from the Economic Research Service and USDA’s monthly yield and price estimates. The Farm Service Agency will run the program, and the money comes from the Commodity Credit Corporation.
What farmers should do now
USDA has not yet announced when applications open or when payments will arrive. It said payment rates for major (Title I) commodities will be published in November, with the method for other crops to follow later. Farmers are being told to set up a Login.gov account in advance so they can use pre-filled online applications. Crop insurance is not required to take part. Specialty crop growers and fishermen were invited to send data on their fuel costs to the department.
The bigger picture
Diesel prices have climbed sharply this year. The Wichita Eagle reported they rose from about $3.70 a gallon to about $6.23 at the height of harvest. Reuters noted the announcement came during a midterm campaign stop, and Agri-Pulse said the program is modelled on USDA’s earlier $12 billion Farmer Bridge Assistance payments.
VSH take: the money arrives at a costly time for growers, but the details that matter most, rates per acre and timing, are still weeks away. To see how fuel prices hit your own budget, try our fuel cost calculator or the percentage calculator.
Why it matters
Fuel is one of the biggest costs at harvest time, and higher diesel prices squeeze farm incomes. How much each farm receives, and when, will shape decisions on everything from storage to next year’s planting.
