How to use: Enter your hourly rate, total hours, the weekly threshold where overtime starts, the multiplier, and any double-time hours.
Work out your regular pay, overtime at time and a half, double time and total gross pay for the week.
How overtime is calculated
Hours up to the threshold are paid at your normal rate; hours above it are paid at the multiplier (usually 1.5×, “time and a half”). Some jobs pay 2× for holidays or long shifts.
Common thresholds
- USA: federal law (FLSA) requires 1.5× after 40 hours a week for non-exempt workers; some states add daily rules.
- Canada: depends on the province, for example 44 hours a week in Ontario and 40 in British Columbia (which also has daily overtime).
- India: the Factories Act sets twice the ordinary rate beyond 9 hours a day or 48 a week.
Check your employer and local labour rules. Convert to annual pay with the salary calculator or add up shifts with the hours calculator.
VSH take: this shows gross pay before tax.
Examples
- $20/h, 45 h, after 40 at 1.5×: $800 + $150 = $950.
- Ontario: $18/h, 50 h, after 44: $792 + $162 = $954.
- 4 double-time holiday hours: Adds 4 × $40 = $160 at $20/h.
