The VSH take: how far away is “space”?
Most people never get a feel for how thin our sky is. The six steps above make it visible. At rooftop height (about 300 m) you can pick out cars and trees. At 10 km you are where airliners fly. At 100 km you cross the Kármán line, where space is usually said to begin, and your whole city is a smudge. At 400 km you are riding with the International Space Station, and at 20,000 km you see the whole curve of the planet, the height GPS satellites orbit at. If Earth were a basketball, the ISS would orbit less than a centimetre above it.
How to get the best view of your house
- Use the full address with city and country, or a postcode / ZIP code, for the most exact pin.
- “Use my location” works best on a phone outdoors, where GPS is accurate to a few metres. On a laptop it may be off by a block.
- Zoom one step out if your area is blurry. Some rural areas only have lower-resolution images.
- Open in Google Maps (link under the map) for Street View, or use Google Earth to see older photos of your area.
Is this a live satellite picture?
No, and any site that promises live video of your house is not telling the truth. The close-up images are made from satellite and aircraft photos stitched together, usually updated every one to three years in cities. For a daily picture of the whole planet from real NASA satellites, see our Live Earth From Space page. To see how places changed over 40 years, try Earth Then & Now or Earth Timelapse Year by Year.
Privacy and safety
Your location is only used inside your browser to centre the map; we never store it. Remember not to share screenshots of your home address publicly, especially for kids. The map imagery comes from Google Maps under its standard embed, which blurs or limits some sensitive sites.

Frequently asked questions
How do I see a satellite view of my house?
Type your full address (or a postcode) in the box and press Show, or tap “Use my location”. The map switches to satellite view and zooms to rooftop level.
Is this a live picture of my house?
No. Satellite and aerial photos are usually taken months or a few years apart, so cars, trees and building work may look different. No public service shows a live video of homes.
Do you save my address or location?
No. Your location is used only in your browser to centre the map. ViralScopeHub does not store or send it anywhere except to the map itself.
How high is “space”?
Space is usually said to start at the Kármán line, about 100 km up. The International Space Station orbits about 400 km up, and weather satellites about 36,000 km up.
Why is my area blurry?
Some rural places, military sites and areas with frequent clouds have lower-resolution images. Try zooming out one step or using Google Earth’s historical imagery.
