Short answer

To remove location from a photo, strip its EXIF metadata before you share the file. On iPhone, tap Options in the share sheet and turn off Location. On Android, turn off location tags in the camera settings for future photos. For any photo on any device, our free EXIF Remover shows what is hidden and downloads a clean copy, without uploading anything.

Your phone saves more than pixels when you take a picture. Inside most photo files there is a small block of hidden data called EXIF metadata. It can include the date and time, the phone model and, if location was switched on, the exact GPS coordinates of where you were standing. Post that original file on a marketplace, email it or share it as a cloud link, and anyone who downloads it can read those details with free software.

That matters most for photos taken at home: items you are selling, a new car in the driveway, your children in the garden or a parcel on the doorstep. This guide shows how to check a photo for location data and remove it on every common device.

Step 1: Check whether a photo has location data

The quickest check works on any phone or computer. Open our EXIF Remover, choose the photo, and it lists what it found: GPS location, camera make and model, software and the date taken. A red note appears if the photo contains a location. The check runs entirely in your browser, so the photo is not uploaded.

You can also look in your gallery app. In Google Photos, open a photo and swipe up to see its details and map. Google explains how to view, edit and remove estimated or saved locations in its help page (linked in the sources below). On an iPhone, open the photo in Photos and swipe up to see the map.

Step 2: Remove location on iPhone

  1. Open the photo in Photos and tap Share.
  2. At the top of the share sheet, tap Options.
  3. Turn off Location, tap Done, then share as normal.

This removes the location from the copy you share; the original in your library keeps it. Apple describes this in the iPhone User Guide. To stop saving location in new photos, go to Settings β†’ Privacy & Security β†’ Location Services β†’ Camera and choose Never.

Step 3: Remove location on Android

Menus differ by brand, but most camera apps have a Location tags or Save location switch in their settings. Turn it off for future photos. You can also remove the Camera app's location permission in your phone's app permission settings, which Google describes in its Android help. For photos you already took, run them through the EXIF Remover before sending.

Step 4: Remove location on a computer

On Windows, right-click a photo, choose Properties β†’ Details and use Remove Properties and Personal Information. On a Mac, the Preview app can show GPS data in the inspector. The browser method works the same everywhere: drop up to 30 photos into the EXIF Remover and download clean copies. JPG and PNG files are cleaned without re-compressing, so quality stays the same.

Which apps already strip location?

Large social apps usually remove most metadata from the version they publish, but you should not rely on that. Files sent as documents, email attachments, cloud-drive links, many forums and some marketplace sites keep the original file. If you are not sure, clean the photo first. It takes seconds.

Other things a photo can give away

VSH take

Turning off location for the camera is the one setting most people never change, and it is the one that matters most. Our routine: location off for the camera, and every photo of the home, the kids or anything for sale goes through the EXIF Remover before it leaves the phone. iPhone HEIC photos can be converted first with our HEIC to JPG converter, and large files shrunk with the image compressor.

Frequently asked questions

Does a photo show where it was taken?

Often, yes. If location was on when you took it, the GPS coordinates are saved in the photo's EXIF data and can be read by anyone who has the original file.

Does removing EXIF data reduce photo quality?

Not with a lossless tool. Our EXIF Remover deletes only the metadata from JPG and PNG files and leaves the image itself untouched.

Do Instagram and WhatsApp remove location from photos?

They generally remove most metadata from the published image, but files sent as documents, email attachments and cloud links usually keep it, so cleaning first is safer.

How do I stop my iPhone saving location in photos?

Go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera and choose Never. For single photos, turn off Location under Options in the share sheet.

Is it safe to use an online EXIF remover?

Use one that runs in your browser. Ours processes the photo on your device and never uploads it.
