Dead Pixel Test
Check a new or second-hand screen for dead or stuck pixels before the return window closes.
Controls: tap / click or → for next colour, ← for previous, Esc to exit. A small hint shows for 2 seconds and then hides so it does not hide pixels.
The VSH take: a 60-second buyer’s check
The test goes through 10 screens in a smart order: black first (for hot pixels that always glow), then white, red, green and blue (for dead and stuck ones), then grey, a gradient for banding, and a dark-grey screen in a dark room for backlight bleed around the edges. Do it on the day a new screen arrives, since most shops only accept pixel returns for a short time.
Dead vs stuck pixels
- Dead pixel: always black. Usually cannot be fixed. Check your maker’s pixel policy for a replacement.
- Stuck pixel: always one colour. Sometimes it recovers after gently massaging the spot with a soft cloth while the screen is off, or after a few hours of use.
- Hot pixel: always bright white, easiest to see on the black screen.
- Dust: a spot that moves or looks blurry is often dust on the screen. Wipe it first.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check for dead pixels?
Open the full-screen test and go through each colour. Look closely at the whole screen. A dot that stays black on every colour is dead.
Can a stuck pixel be fixed?
Sometimes. Stuck pixels can recover after time or gentle pressure with a soft cloth while the screen is off. Dead pixels usually cannot.
Does this work on phones and TVs?
Yes. Open it in your phone browser or a smart TV browser and tap to change colours.
How many dead pixels are acceptable?
It depends on the maker’s policy. Many replace a screen with even one bright or dead pixel near the centre; check your warranty.
Is the test safe for my screen?
Yes. It only shows solid colours. It has no fast flashing.
