Anand Meets Modi, Pushes India Trade Deal by Year-End

In brief
Canada Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, according to a Global Affairs Canada readout dated 15 October 2026. They discussed energy, education, culture, technology and completing a comprehensive economic partnership agreement by the end of the year, with Modi expected in Canada in December.
Global Affairs Canada said the meeting was Anand’s second with Modi and that she congratulated him on 25 years of public service. Officials pointed to progress on the Canada–India joint roadmap and welcomed a bilateral security dialogue held in India the previous week at the national security adviser level.
According to the same readout, both sides stressed concluding a comprehensive economic partnership agreement before year-end and highlighted a Team Canada trade mission led by International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu as evidence of growing commercial ties in the Indo-Pacific. Anand said she looked forward to welcoming Modi in Canada in December.
Independent Canadian briefings on 15 October also described the talks as part of a broader push to deepen non-U.S. trade partnerships. Details of any final treaty text were not published with the readout.
