In brief

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne told the House of Commons on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that the federal government will table Budget 2026 on Thursday, November 5. It will be the second budget under Prime Minister Mark Carney and the second in a row presented in the fall instead of the spring.

Why a fall budget again

Ottawa used to release its budget in the spring. Last year the Carney government moved it to the fall, saying an autumn plan gives provinces, cities and federal departments more time to prepare for the next fiscal year. Champagne made the announcement during Question Period, and the Department of Finance confirmed the date in a media advisory, saying the budget will focus on a stronger, more resilient economy and on making life more affordable. The date falls two days after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3.

The numbers in the background

On the same day, the Parliamentary Budget Officer, Annette Ryan, trimmed her growth forecast to 0.9 per cent for 2026 and 1.5 per cent for 2027, citing new trade measures and uncertainty. The PBO now expects a deficit of about $63.3 billion in 2026-27, rising to a peak of $70.2 billion in 2027-28, and says new spending has more than used up the boost from higher oil prices, CBC News reported. Statistics Canada said this week that annual inflation edged up to 3.1 per cent in September, mostly because of fuel prices.
