Food bank visits in Canada hit a record 2.35 million a month

In brief
Canada's food banks recorded more than 2.35 million visits in March 2026, a new record, according to Food Banks Canada's annual HungerCount report released on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. That is 8.7 per cent more than in March 2025 and 117 per cent more than in 2019, and nearly a third of the visits were made by children.
Who is using food banks now
HungerCount is a yearly snapshot gathered from the more than 5,500 food banks and community organizations in the Food Banks Canada network. This year's numbers show how the picture has changed. Almost one in five clients (18 per cent) has a job, compared with just over one in ten (12.2 per cent) in 2019. About 776,000 of the monthly visits, or 32.5 per cent, were made by children. Seven in ten clients (72 per cent) rent at market rates, and the report says people on the lowest incomes spend about 60 per cent of their disposable income on housing alone.
The report links the rise to everyday costs. Since 2021, it says, food prices have climbed about 30 per cent, housing costs 28 per cent and transportation nearly 24 per cent. CEO Kirstin Beardsley told The Canadian Press that people are "running out of options", and that some who used to donate to food banks now need them. The report also says one in five food banks is running out of food before it can meet everyone's needs.
What the report asks Ottawa to do
Food Banks Canada is calling on the federal government to modernize Employment Insurance so it covers more part-time, seasonal and gig workers, to double the Canada Workers Benefit and index it to inflation, to make the Disability Tax Credit easier to access, and to invest in food infrastructure. The timing matters: Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne will table the 2026 federal budget on November 5.
