In brief

The federal government announced close to $5 million in funding for Rugby Canada for 2026-27 on October 23, 2026, during the Canadian women's team's match against England in Ottawa. Secretary of State (Sport) Adam van Koeverden said the money includes an extra $2.8 million this year from the Spring Economic Update, part of what Ottawa calls a generational $1-billion investment in sport.

Where the money goes

According to Canadian Heritage, Rugby Canada will receive $4,975,000 through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program in 2026-27, which includes the recent top-up of $2,815,000. A separate $898,000 from the Sport Canada Hosting Program covers four international events held in Canada this year: $250,000 for the World Rugby Nations Cup in Edmonton and Calgary (June 28 to July 11), $150,000 for the Nations Cup in Winnipeg (July 12 to 19), and $249,000 each for the WXV Global Series matches in Toronto on October 16 and Ottawa on October 23.

The announcement came a week after the women's team beat England in Toronto, a win the government called historic. Rugby Canada CEO Nathan Bombrys said the support lines up with the organization's goals of helping its teams win, growing partnerships and hosting major events.

The bigger sport budget

The Spring Economic Update 2026 set aside $755 million over five years, plus $118 million a year ongoing, for Canada's sport system. Most of it, $660 million over five years, is meant to get more Canadians, especially children and youth, playing sport through national organizations. Another $50 million supports hosting world-class events, and $45 million goes to athletes, including mental health support tied to safe sport measures.

VSH take: Money for national teams makes headlines, but the bigger share aimed at kids and community clubs is the part most families will notice, if it reaches local fields.
