Arizona's Chiricahua is now a national park, America's newest

In brief
Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona is now Chiricahua National Park, after President Donald Trump signed the Chiricahua National Park Act into law on October 20, 2026, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced on October 21.
What makes Chiricahua special
The park protects about 12,000 acres (roughly 4,860 hectares) of rugged volcanic country near Willcox, best known for its towering rhyolite spires and balanced rocks, formed by a volcanic eruption about 27 million years ago. It sits on a "sky island" in the Chiricahua Mountains, where desert, grassland and forest meet, so it is rich in wildlife and a favourite for birders and stargazers. The area was first protected as a national monument in 1924 and is the homeland of the Chiricahua Apache. It also preserves the story of early homesteaders at Faraway Ranch.
What changes for visitors
Mostly the name. The National Park Service says hiking, camping, scenic drives and wildlife viewing continue as before, and current visitor information is on the park's NPS page. Officials hope the national park title will put the spot on more travellers' lists and help nearby towns.
VSH take: new national parks tend to get a rush of visitors in their first year, so go early in the day and check conditions first.
