World summit in Samarkand puts children's health, learning and cancer care in the spotlight

In brief
More than 600 participants from over 100 countries gathered in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on October 21, 2026, for the UN-backed World Summit Investing in Children's Wellbeing, UN News reported. The meeting looks at how health, education, protection and family support can work together so more children thrive.
What leaders said
In a message read at the opening, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that "when we invest in children, we invest in the future", while warning that falling aid, poverty and climate shocks are putting progress at risk. UN General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman urged countries to turn promises into budgets, noting that only 36% of assessable Sustainable Development Goal targets are on track or making moderate progress. The summit was organized by Uzbekistan with UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the UN office on violence against children, and children and teens are taking part too.
A focus on childhood cancer
The summit includes the Second International Congress on Childhood Cancer. According to WHO, more than 80% of children with cancer are cured in high-income countries, but fewer than 30% in many low- and middle-income countries. About 400,000 children and teens are diagnosed each year, and WHO aims to raise global survival to 60% by 2030. Delegates also heard about a hospital school in Tashkent where children aged 2 to 18 keep studying during long treatment. Host Uzbekistan says preschool enrolment rose from 27% in 2017 to 78% in 2026.
VSH take: the hospital-school idea stood out to us, because keeping kids learning during treatment helps them return to normal life. Families can find free learning help on our study pages, and earlier this week we covered WHO's new heat-health guidance for children.
