Moon sighting: why dates differ
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, so a year is about 354 days and every date moves roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. A month begins after the new moon, once the thin crescent is judged visible.
Communities decide this in different ways. Some, such as Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar, use a fixed astronomical calculation. Others require the crescent to be sighted locally or anywhere in a wider region. Because the crescent is not visible everywhere on the same night, the same Eid may be announced on different days in different countries, and sometimes in different cities. The announcement is often made only the evening before.
That is why we show the calculated date and, where the Government of India publishes an expected holiday date, we show that too. Final dates for prayer and fasting should always come from your local religious authority. For prayer times in your city, use the local mosque or an app your community trusts.
Frequently asked questions
When does Ramadan 2027 start?
The AlAdhan calculation puts the first day of Ramadan 1448 on Monday, February 8, 2027. Where the new moon is sighted locally, such as in India and Pakistan, it may begin a day later.
When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?
Calculated: Tuesday, March 9, 2027. The Government of India expected holiday date is Wednesday, March 10, 2027 and depends on the moon being sighted.
When is Eid al-Adha in 2026 and 2027?
Calculated: Wednesday, May 27, 2026 in 2026 and Sunday, May 16, 2027 in 2027. Sighting-based communities may celebrate a day later.
Why do Eid dates differ between countries?
Some countries follow astronomical calculations and others follow local or regional moon sighting. The crescent is not visible everywhere on the same evening.
