How the Nanakshahi calendar works

The Nanakshahi calendar counts years from the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1469 CE, so Samvat 558 began on March 14, 2026. Its months follow the names of the traditional Desi (Bikrami) months: Chet, Vaisakh, Jeth, Harh, Sawan, Bhadon, Assu, Katik, Maghar, Poh, Magh and Phagun, but they are set by the Sun, like the Gregorian calendar.

A calendar was adopted in 2003 with fixed Gregorian dates for most gurpurabs. In 2010 the SGPC revised it: dates connected with the Moon, such as the birth of Guru Nanak (Prakash Purab on Kartik Purnima) and Hola Mohalla, now move with the lunar calendar, while many other dates follow the Sun’s sankranti. Some bodies and groups still follow the original fixed-date calendar, which is why a few dates differ between Gurdwaras by a day or more.

Types of observance: Prakash Purab marks a Guru’s birth, Gurgaddi Diwas the day a Guru took the Guruship, Joti Jot the day a Guru left this world, and Shaheedi Purab remembers martyrdom.
