01 — Story

The brief

Frost Haven is a winter survival town builder. The furnace is the heart of the ring. Burn wood and coal or the cold takes the shift. Cabins raise how many neighbors the valley can hold. Kitchens turn meat into meals. A care house mends people. A field study writes what the cold teaches, and those notes buy the tech tree.

Thirty town levels sit over six chapters of work: hearths, stores, trails, and the long book of studies. Ten heroes join as you qualify. Ilya Ember is already at the furnace and burns less fuel while tending town. Torin Vale is already at the gate and makes an expedition walk faster. Bram, Nessa, Sable, Hester, Oren, Lumen, Yara, and Soren arrive on wood, buildings, or level gates.

Storms are the exam. Whiteouts and blizzard week make the furnace drink. Stack coal before the wind, and keep a lamplighter in town if you have one. Aurora festivals do the opposite kind of work: extra bowls, extra research, a green curtain over the ring. The achievement list remembers a whiteout, three whiteouts, a full blizzard week, and one aurora.

The wild is chunks of snow, groves, coal seams, iron, and ruins. Three great beasts have names and places: the March Warden, the Shelf Guardian, and the Sky Stag. You meet them with a meal offering. The game’s own line on the hunt lodge is the rule of the valley: it does not harm its animals. Shy beasts leave a fuller cache when Yara Moss is on the trail.

A first week that works

Feed the furnace before you admire the view. Raise a sawmill so wood is not a walk every time. Cook before you send anyone out. Expeditions spend meals as rations and come home with wood, coal, meat, iron, or notes. If the wind is rising, cancel the romance of a long trail and fill the coal drift.

What the studies buy

Branches start at the field study. Later notes need the one before them and a higher town level. Quilted walls, wider furnace heat, deeper coal shafts, faster mending, marked trails, and aurora bonuses all live on that tree. Finishing studies is its own achievement path, from Field Notes to Deep Book.

Roster

Heroes

Ten neighbors with jobs. Two are already in the valley. The rest arrive when a building rises or the town level says so. Assign them to town or to the wilds.

Stoker

Ilya Ember

SignatureBanked Coals

Already at the furnace. While Ilya tends town, the furnace burns 20% less fuel.

Pathfinder

Torin Vale

SignatureLong Sight

Already at the gate. On an expedition the party walks faster, and frozen ruins yield a richer bundle.

Woodward

Bram Holt

SignatureKeen Grain

Arrives after the town has gathered 40 wood. Sawmill wood, and wild groves when he travels, come in fuller.

Mender

Nessa Quill

SignaturePine Salve

Arrives when a care house is raised. Rest is quicker in town. On the trail, rations last longer.

Mapkeeper

Sable Wren

SignatureMargin Notes

Arrives at town level 5. The party walks a little faster, and ruins yield one more page of research.

Glasskeeper

Hester Coil

SignatureIce Panes

Arrives when a glass garden is raised. Kitchens and the garden turn out more meals.

Smith

Oren Pike

SignatureTrue Nail

Arrives when the ember smithy is raised. The smithy and wild scrap both yield more iron.

Lamplighter

Lumen Ash

SignatureSteady Wick

Arrives when the lantern spire is raised. During a whiteout or blizzard week, the furnace drinks less if Lumen tends town.

Forager

Yara Moss

SignatureSoft Step

Arrives at town level 15. Shy beasts leave a fuller cache, and the hunt lodge brings in more food.

Skywatcher

Soren Vale

SignatureGreen Curtain

Arrives when the star loft is raised, or the town reaches level 26. Aurora nights write extra research. In the Star Rime the party keeps a quicker pace.

Kit

Weapons

Frost Haven does not have a weapon rack. The tools are workplaces, fuel, and meals. The wild asks for an offering, not a kill.

Heart

Furnace

RoleWood and coal

The shift ends if it goes out. Level it. Banked coals and a lamplighter stretch the same pile.

Fuel

Sawmill and coal drift

RoleWood, coal

Cuts snow pine. The drift is the black half of every whiteout plan.

Meals

Kitchen and cellar

RoleRations

Meat becomes meals. A cellar makes hunger move more slowly. Expeditions pack meals, not hope.

Mending

Care house

RolePine salve

Worn neighbors rest and mend. The town never leaves someone behind. That line is in the build.

Notes

Field study

RoleTech tree

Research notes buy warmth, mines, trails, and aurora work. Each branch starts here.

Wild

Meal offering

RoleA bowl, not a blade

The three great beasts want meals. The hunt lodge is careful foraging. The valley does not harm its animals.

Rides

Vehicles

Expeditions walk. A studied sled keeps its pace between waystones. There is no combat vehicle.

Default

Expedition on foot

RoleRations

Heroes walk the chunks. Torin, Sable, and trail studies make that walk faster.

Trail study

Sled

RoleWaystones

Stone markers between chunks. The study text says the sled keeps its pace. It is a trail tool, not a racer.

Ground

Maps and locations

Home snow, then Birch March, Glass Shelf, and Star Rime. Three great beasts wait on fixed chunks if you bring meals.

The ring

Home Snow

KindFurnace

The town itself. Plots, cabins, and the workplaces you raise inside the warm radius.

Near wild

Birch March

KindGroves

The first band of chunks past home. Wood and the March Warden.

Middle wild

Glass Shelf

KindIce and iron

Farther ground. The Shelf Guardian waits on a fixed chunk with a meal price.

Far wild

Star Rime

KindResearch

The outer band. Soren’s sky work is aimed here. The Sky Stag is the third offering.

Great beast

March Warden

KindThree meals

A fixed meeting. Bring the offering. Leave with a cache, not a trophy.

Great beast

Shelf Guardian

KindFour meals

The second beast. Three Wardens, the achievement, asks you to meet all three.

Great beast

Sky Stag

KindFive meals

The far offering. Five meals is the price in the build.
