In brief

National Park Service sites that normally charge an entrance fee will be free to enter on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, to mark the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president. It is one of eight fee-free dates on the NPS calendar this year. The next and last one in 2026 is Veterans Day, November 11.

What is free, and for whom

The NPS fee-free page says entrance fees are waived at all parks that charge them. Other charges can still apply, including timed-entry or reservation fees, camping, tours, parking and concessions. One change matters for visitors from Canada, India and elsewhere: beginning in 2026, free entrance days apply only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Non-residents pay the normal entrance fee and any non-resident fee. At 11 of the busiest parks, including Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion, non-residents aged 16 and older also pay a $100 non-resident fee unless they hold an annual pass.

Why Roosevelt

Roosevelt, born October 27, 1858, is remembered as a conservation president. In 1906 he signed the Antiquities Act, which lets presidents protect places of historic or scientific interest as national monuments. The day also falls a week after Arizona's Chiricahua National Monument was redesignated as the country's newest national park.

Tips if you plan to go

VSH take: A free Tuesday is a great nudge for a fall day trip, but international visitors should not plan around it this year. Budget for the regular fee instead. Planning a bigger trip? Why it matters

Entrance fees at popular parks can be $35 or more per vehicle, so a fee-free day saves families real money, while the new residents-only rule changes plans for foreign visitors.
