United Nations Day 2026: the UN turns 81 as Guterres calls for 'dialogue over division'

In brief
October 24 is United Nations Day, the anniversary of the day in 1945 when the UN Charter came into force and the United Nations officially came into being. In his message for 2026, Secretary-General António Guterres said that for 81 years the UN has given life to the idea that humanity's future depends on working together, and urged countries to choose "dialogue over division, cooperation over confrontation, solidarity over fear."
Why October 24?
In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco to draw up the UN Charter. The organization officially came into existence on October 24, 1945, once the Charter had been ratified by a majority of signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council: China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. Today the UN has 193 member states.
What Guterres said
In his video message, the Secretary-General listed the UN's work on settling disputes through diplomacy and law, fighting poverty and hunger, promoting human rights, delivering aid in disasters, protecting health and the planet, and expanding opportunity for women and girls. He said the world is being reshaped by the climate crisis, rising inequality and technology that moves faster than the rules governing it, and asked all countries to recommit to the Charter and international law and to strengthen the UN.
Countries marked the day too. In a statement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada helped shape the Charter in 1945, is the UN's sixth-largest contributor, and that "cooperation is not an ideal, it is a necessity."
