The four main lines

  • Heart Line: feelings, affection and how you connect.
  • Head Line: thinking style, curiosity and focus.
  • Life Line: energy, vitality and life changes.
  • Fate Line: career, direction and life path.

Tap a line name for a closer look at six common types of each.

How to read your palm in five minutes

  1. Wash and relax your hands. Sit in good light and hold your hand palm-up, relaxed, not stretched flat.
  2. Pick a hand. Start with your dominant hand, then look at the other for fun.
  3. Spot the big lines. Use the diagram to find the heart line (top), head line (middle), life line (curving round the thumb) and fate line (up the middle, if present).
  4. Look at depth and length. Deep and clear is read as strong and steady; faint lines as soft and flexible. Neither is good or bad.
  5. Check the hand shape. See the table below.
  6. Enjoy it. Share what you found with a friend and compare your hands.

Hand shapes in palmistry

Many palmists begin by looking at the palm’s shape and finger length, linked to the four elements.

TypeWhat it looks likeTraditional personality
Earth handSquare palm, short fingersPractical, steady, reliable
Air handSquare palm, long fingersCurious, chatty, intellectual
Water handLong palm, long fingersSensitive, creative, intuitive
Fire handLong palm, short fingersEnergetic, bold, spontaneous

Left hand or right hand?

A common rule: the dominant hand shows how you are shaping life now, and the other hand shows what you were born with. Some traditions in India read the right hand for men and the left for women. It is a fun difference, not a fixed law.

Beyond the four lines

Advanced guides also look at the sun line (creativity and recognition), the mercury line (communication), the mounts (the fleshy pads under each finger) and small marks such as stars, crosses and islands. Start with the four main lines, then explore more when you are curious.

What palm reading cannot do

Palm lines cannot tell you about health, how long you will live, whether a relationship will last or whether you will get a job. Please do not make real-life decisions from palm lines. If you have a health concern, see a doctor. A good palm reading is a story you enjoy and then put down.

Frequently asked questions

Is palm reading real?

Palmistry is an old tradition found in India, China and Europe, but there is no scientific evidence that palm lines predict anything. Enjoy it as a game and a way to chat with friends, not as advice.

Which hand should I read?

Many palmists look at the dominant hand (the one you write with) for who you are now and the other hand for what you started with. Others read only one hand. There is no single rule.

How many lines are there in the palm?

Most guides cover four main lines: the heart line, head line, life line and fate line. Some add the sun line, the mercury line and bracelet lines at the wrist.

Can I do a palm reading online?

You can read your own palm with our diagram and guides. We do not offer or sell personal readings, and we never ask you to upload a photo of your hand.

Does a short or missing line mean something bad?

No. Lines differ in length and depth from person to person. Palmists do not read short or faint lines as bad luck, and neither do we. This page is only for fun.
