Short answer

To fix a sideways video, rotate it 90° right if the top of the picture is on the left, 90° left if the top is on the right, and 180° if it is upside down. Use a horizontal flip only for mirrored selfie videos where writing reads backwards. Our free Rotate Video tool turns every frame for real, so the fix shows up correctly in every app, and it runs in your browser with no upload.

It happens to everyone. You film your kid's first goal, a birthday cake or a pretty sunset, and when you open it on a laptop or send it in a chat, the whole thing is lying on its side. Nobody wants to tilt their head for two minutes. The good news is that a sideways video is not broken. The picture is all there; it just needs to be turned, and that takes a few seconds once you know which way to go.

Which way should I rotate?

Look at where the top of the scene (the sky, a ceiling, people's heads) ends up, then use this quick table:

What you seePick this
The top of the picture is on the left sideRotate 90° right (clockwise)
The top of the picture is on the right sideRotate 90° left (anticlockwise)
Everything is upside downRotate 180°
Writing and logos read backwardsFlip horizontally (mirror)
Upside down and mirrored at the same time (rare)Flip vertically

Not sure? Just try one. Your original file never changes, so if the preview still looks wrong you can run the other option on the original.

Step by step: rotate a video for free

  1. Open the tool. Go to Rotate Video on a phone or computer.
  2. Choose your video. It stays on your device; nothing is uploaded to a server.
  3. Pick the turn. Rotate 90° right, 90° left, 180°, or one of the two flips, using the table above.
  4. Press Rotate video and wait while your browser does the work. Longer or bigger clips take a little longer.
  5. Check and download. Play the result, then save the new MP4. The original sound is kept.

If you only need part of the clip, cut it first with the Video Trimmer. A shorter video rotates faster and is smaller to share.

Rotate or flip: they are not the same thing

Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre, like turning a printed photo on a table. A 90° turn also swaps the width and height: a 1920 × 1080 landscape frame becomes 1080 × 1920 portrait. The number of pixels stays exactly the same (2,073,600 either way), so nothing is cropped off and nothing is stretched.

Flipping makes a mirror image instead. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, which is what you want when a front-camera video shows a T-shirt slogan backwards. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom. Flipping a normal video by mistake is a classic error, because a mirrored picture can look almost right until you spot a clock, a sign or a parting in someone's hair.

Why does my video look fine on my phone but sideways elsewhere?

Phones work out which way is up from how you hold them when you press record. Many phones then save the video in one fixed orientation and add a small rotation note inside the file that tells players how to turn it. Your phone's gallery reads that note, so the video looks fine there. Some older players, TVs, editing apps and websites ignore the note and show the raw picture, which is sideways.

That is also why some "rotate" buttons seem to work and then the video is sideways again on another device: they only change the note. Our tool does the opposite. It turns every frame itself and saves a new MP4, so there is no note left to ignore. Under the hood it uses the same kind of rotation filter (FFmpeg's transpose) that professional video software relies on, running inside your browser.

Does rotating lower the quality?

Turning every frame means the video has to be re-encoded, so it is not a perfect copy bit for bit. In practice the tool saves at a high-quality setting and the difference is very hard to see on a phone or laptop screen. If the new file comes out larger than you would like for WhatsApp or email, run it through the Video Compressor afterwards, and our guide on how to calculate video file size explains why some clips are so big.

After rotating: making it fit Reels, Shorts or a widescreen video

A sideways clip that was really filmed upright will become a proper vertical video after a 90° turn, which is perfect for Reels, Shorts and stories. If you need the opposite, a vertical clip inside a widescreen video, rotating will not help, because turning a portrait video just makes it lie on its side. Use Resize Video for Reels to add blurred bars instead, and read how to resize a video for Instagram Reels for the sizes each app expects. Want a quick looping clip of the fixed video? See how to make a GIF from a video. Got a sideways photo too? The Image Cropper can rotate pictures.

A quick habit that prevents sideways videos

Most sideways videos start the same way: the phone is lying flat on a table, pointing down at a cake or a board game, when recording starts. The phone cannot tell which way is up, so it guesses. Before you press record, tilt the phone up for a second so it settles on the right orientation, and keep screen rotation unlocked if you want landscape videos. Many camera apps also show a small icon or grid that turns when the phone changes orientation, which is a handy hint.

VSH take: a sideways video is one of the most common small tech annoyances, and most people simply live with it or reshoot. Fixing it should take a few seconds, cost nothing and never mean uploading your family videos to a stranger's server. That is the bar we set for our free video tools, and rotating is the easiest one to start with. Also handy for private clips: how to blur a face in a video.

Rotation directions are described from the official FFmpeg filter documentation (transpose filter), and phone editing options from Apple's iPhone User Guide, as of October 2026. Pixel figures are our own arithmetic. ViralScopeHub is not affiliated with Apple or the FFmpeg project.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a sideways video?

Open our free Rotate Video tool, choose the video, pick Rotate 90° right if the top of the picture is on the left (or 90° left if it is on the right), press Rotate video and download the new MP4.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping a video?

Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre. Flipping makes a mirror image. Use a horizontal flip only when writing reads backwards, for example in a front-camera video.

Why is my video sideways on my computer but not on my phone?

Many phones save video in one orientation and add a rotation note that tells players how to turn it. Some players and websites ignore the note. Rotating every frame for real fixes it everywhere.

Does rotating a video reduce its quality?

The video is re-encoded at a high-quality setting, so the difference is very hard to see. Pixel count does not change: a 1920 × 1080 clip becomes 1080 × 1920.

Is my video uploaded when I rotate it?

No. The rotation happens in your browser on your own device, free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
